Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has said that the government is taking several steps to bring the capabilities of research and manufacturing in the defense sector on one platform and the country will soon come into a major role in the field of defense exports. Rajnath said this on Thursday on the occasion of the annual launch of Naval Innovation and Indigenization Organization (NIIO). The organization is a joint initiative of the Navy, Uttar Pradesh Expressway Industrial Development Authority (Upeeda), Raksha Shakti University and the startup ‘Maker Village’. He said that this initiative will give a new dimension to defense indigenization and innovation.

He said that the Prime Minister has shown the path of ‘self-reliant India’ to turn ‘disaster into opportunity’ and innovation and indigenization will play an important role in this effort. Based on these, the foundation of self-reliance can be laid.

Referring to agreements made with universities, startups, industrial organizations and defense industrial corridors on the occasion, he said that all stakeholders will have to work step by step to achieve self-sufficiency in the defense sector. Cooperation, coordination and partnership are important for this.

He said that users of products need to work closely with universities and industries for the products they need. The Navy is taking initiative in this direction. He said that for self-reliant India it is necessary to bring the users of the products with different stakeholders and the role of the Navy in it becomes bigger. Uttar Pradesh has taken up the challenge of defense corridor under Upenda and its results will be seen soon. The government will soon bring a bill to give the status of Central University to Raksha Shakti University.

Appreciating the role of the Navy in indigenization in the defense sector, he said that good work has been done on the warship-making front and now there is a need to focus on ‘fight components’. The country has been dependent on defense imports for a long time and could not emerge as a country supplying defense equipment and weapons.

He said, “We have the best talent in the world and the research of our institutes attests to this. In the last few years, research has started in the defense sector, which has created a strong bond between equipment users and research institutes. ” Rajnath said that the government has taken several steps to exploit these capabilities to bring them on a common platform and construction of defense corridors is one of them. He said that with all these efforts, the country will progress towards defense self-sufficiency and will become a major center for defense exports. The event was also attended by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and other senior officials of the defense sector.
